Crew housing calculator: how many units for your crew
Units needed for 50, 100, and 200 workers
| Model | Rooms per unit | 50 workers | 100 workers | 200 workers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5-room crew unit (shared kitchen) | 5 | 10 units (50 rooms) | 20 units (100 rooms) | 40 units (200 rooms) |
| 5-room sleeper (no kitchen) | 5 | 10 units (50 rooms) | 20 units (100 rooms) | 40 units (200 rooms) |
| 6-room crew unit | 6 | 9 units (54 rooms) | 17 units (102 rooms) | 34 units (204 rooms) |
| 7-room high-density sleeper | 7 | 8 units (56 rooms) | 15 units (105 rooms) | 29 units (203 rooms) |
| 4-suite unit (full kitchens) | 4 | 13 units (52 rooms) | 25 units (100 rooms) | 50 units (200 rooms) |
One worker per private room. Sleepers have no kitchen, so a camp built on sleepers also needs a dining hall or caterer.

What the numbers leave out
- Common buildings: dining, laundry, offices, and recreation take land and units of their own.
- Parking: crews often bring one truck per worker, which can take more land than the units.
- Septic and utilities: drain fields need significant land. See what utilities a man camp needs.
- Local rules: counties and cities set spacing and fire access. See man camp rules in Texas.
For the full unit math by crew size, see how many units for 50, 100, or 200 workers. For layout ideas, see man camp layout.
Common questions
How does the calculator count units?
It assumes one worker per private room, which is how our units are laid out: every room has its own bath. It divides your headcount, plus any spare rooms, by the rooms in one unit and rounds up.
How long does it take to build the units?
We can build as many as 50 units in about 30 days. Average capacity is about 45 units per month, depending on the production schedule. Permits, site work, and utilities run alongside the build and often set the move-in date.
How much land does a man camp need?
There is no single number. Truck parking, fire spacing, septic, and local rules all change it. The calculator uses one public benchmark, about 10 units per acre, which matches a cap of 10 RV spaces per acre. Treat it as a first pass and confirm with your site engineer and county. See how many units fit on an acre.
Does the calculator give a price?
No. We quote each project in writing after we know the models, count, site, and delivery distance. Inquire for a proposal.
Inquire with your headcount, site, and start window, and our team will help size the order.
